PRESS RELEASE

The Dublin Dragon Boat Regatta returns to Grand Canal Dock, Dublin on Saturday, 14th & Sunday, 15th September 2019.

In its ninth year, Ireland’s premier dragon boat event will see crews from Canada, USA, Great Britain, France and Dubai battle it out against the best Irish crews from around the 32 counties of Ireland. Over 50 million people from 84 nations participate in dragon boat racing every year and for two days this September you too will be able to experience the excitement of an ancient Chinese sport which dates back over 2,000 years.

Speaking of the event, Julie Doyle, Chairman of the IDBA, said: “Dragon boat racing is such a sociable sport and it’s great fun too. It has been great to see the level of competition in Ireland increasing year on year as the sport develops. The regatta does however welcome people of all ages, abilities and fitness levels and is a popular team-building experience for companies and organisations of all sizes. We cater for everyone. We are also very proud of the fact that our sport is gender balanced. Our Women’s category which will run on Sunday has 13 teams and one race alone will see 88 women on the water”.

Races at the regatta will be run over 200 metres and 400 metre distances. Categories include International, Breast Cancer Survivors, Under 18s, Women and the Open Challenge for more novice crews.

The event is jointly run between Plurabelle Paddlers and the Irish Dragon Boat Association and is supported by Waterways Ireland.
